Hon’ble Justice Shri Surya Kant (born 10 February 1962, Hisar, Haryana) is the 53rd Chief Justice of India, taking office on 24 November 2025.
He graduated with a BA from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, and earned his law degree (LLB) from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. He began practicing law in Hisar and later moved to Chandigarh to work in the Punjab & Haryana High Court, specializing in constitutional, civil, and service law.
In 2000, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana, and was designated a Senior Advocate in 2001. In 2004, he was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, serving there for over 14 years. He became Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in October 2018, and was appointed to the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019.
Known for his balanced judgments on constitutional rights, free speech, gender justice, and corruption, he has been part of several landmark verdicts, including on the abrogation of Article 370 removing Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
